OMG...Gun Shop Mayhem

Stopped by my favorite local gun shop this morning. Family owned place, and they all know me by my first name. Just wanted to stop and BS for a while over a cup of coffee...

First sign that something was different...couldn't park in the parking lot. Had to park out front along the state road. I've NEVER seen that before.

There's usually 2 or 3 people at a time in the shop. Had to be 20 in there today, which made it very crowded. I think this made the owner more than a little uncomfortable. Too many people, couldn't keep an eye on everything going on.

My short stop at the shop turned into about 4 hours as I played the part of employee. You name it, somebody was buying it. I was helping several people with handgun selections. I spent a lot of time with two husband-and-wife teams that really caught my attention. The main thing that stuck out? None of the 4 had ever owned or handled a handgun before. "Is this a revolver?" No, it's a semi-automatic. Let's look at revolvers. "How do I load it?" "Is this gun bigger than that gun?" "Which is better for self defense?" I know there are no stupid questions, but the "gun-ignorant" questions just kept coming. It was like talking about guns to a 6 year old. Part of me was intrigued that these people were actually waking up and worried about their future safety, while part of me was terrified at the thought of them owning or handling guns.

In the time I was there, over a dozen guns went out the door. Owner says he's never seen such volume. And this is in an area of central PA that is a hotbed of hunting and shooting. Heck, I thought EVERYBODY already had guns!

I see two things taking place...
1) People who never had guns feel a need to arm themselves for whatever the future may hold.
2)People who already own guns feel a need to stock up on ammo and grab any guns they may want at some point but think will soon be made unavailable.

something is definitely in the air, and the masses can sense it...

I dont want to make this a race issue, but I would like to ask if you noticed this surge more in one race than another, or did it seem more or less equal across the board that people are starting to take control of their own defence?

Good thread, thanks for sharing.

I'd be very interested in hearing/reading what other members are seeing at their local shops, too.

Heimdahl,
Until recently, I'd say the county I live in was about 97% white. Unfortunatley, the "minority" increase is due to increased gang enforcement in a small city about 30 miles away. They are now moving into government housing in this area, as they see it as a safe haven. Anyway, as to your question, the customers that were in the store when I was there were 100% white. Never thought of it before, but I don't know that I've ever seen anyone who wasn't white in there. And it's not a racial thing, there's just no one else around the area until recently!

SB, Thanks for your timely report... in the last month I've read plenty of similar reports coming from all parts of the country from small shops to the big boxes... everthing flying off the shelves and 8 hour wait for background checks.
Isn't it AMAZING?? Folks coming out of the woodwork for the first time...seeking what? security? and not even knowing the basics of safety and handling.
Good of you to help your shop owner...
Good luck

Thats what I figured. For the most part the gun shows and shops around here(in south florida) tend to also be 95%+ white if not 100. But I ask because I think that maybe the white community is growing scared of a possible major racial class or at least a major racial shift, where they feel they will become even larger targets for crime, abuse, harrassment, etc from what they perceive to be an 'entitled' minority community that is growing more bold and angry and seeks some kind of vengence.

I cant say that I blame them as even I have had these feelings and even my wife who is of mixed races(primarily irish with some mexican and native american) has seemed to feel similarly.

You make a good point with the racial crime element seeping into your town and people reacting poorly(as they should) to that.

Of course white folks are stocking up...........They better.

Ask yourself a silly question: As America goes down the toliet........ do you REALLY think Obama is going to pass up the chance to blame them for the misery of the nation because they dont want to SHARE what they have???

He wont say it outright............but with that slick tounge of his , his minions are going to jump on the chance to take what others have.

You mark my words: before we have TOTAL WAR.......... thers is going to be a RACE WAR first. I put it at 36 months or less.

I just picked up my Saiga 12 gauge today and had to wait over 2 and half hours to get my backround check.

These times are a changing..........You better believe it.

If we live that long, LOL!!! I do like the pistol grip stock set. I like the idea of no receiver mods. I guess I'll be spending another $150 soon. I'd like a flash hider too but I ain't spending $85 buck on one. I guess I'll fire up the lathe and mill.

Guess not.

My quick experience today - for the first time ever no parking spots at my favorite local gun store (just like you silverbullet!). I waited until someone came out of the store and took their spot as they left. Second, there is a gun show today, tried to go - no parking spots either!!! Finally parked, a huge line of people and they raised the price to $10 to get in!!! I changed my mind thinking I'd never make it through that many people. Needless to say, I've never seen it like this.

MOST of those new gun owners will never even fire it......they will keep it in a box "in a safe location" with a box of ammo collecting dust somewhere else.

Funny I just picked up a Saiga 12 today too. Thanks for the links, it only came with one mag.
It was busy but not crazy, about 10 people. Owner says very busy hard to get stock.
Also picked up DPMS AP4 308 and Stag 5.56 20" barrel.

Went to an estate auction this morning. They had about 10 firearms for sale. jeez, no bargains here An old, little Berreta .22LR pistol went for $375. A Colt 44 Anaconda revolver went for $875. An old Ruger 1022? LR for $175 (no sight), A very old Ruger .223 Mini14 went for $450.

Tha auctioneer said there were 350 transactions statewide already in line to be processed by our state firearms bureau. On a normal day there are only 25-50 in the queue at any one time.

I see black folks in gun stores all the time around here. Mostly they're young men and, occasionally, young women looking at handguns or older guys looking at hunting rifles. I've never noticed the guys (or, at one store, the lady) behind the counter at the gun stores treating them any differently or looking particularly nervous, but then, this is Atlanta. Racially, we're a very diverse population and have been for a long time, and most of us are comfortable with that. Gun shows down here do still seem to be the bastion of the older white male. You'll see a fair number of black men and a few white women at them, but overall, it's mostly white men in attendance.

It isn't all about race. The same thing happened when Clinton took office. His announcement about signing the background checks and assault weapons ban sold more guns than ever before that time.

I have been experiencing the same thing here in S FL. The gun shops are packed, but almost always with whites.
I am thinking that generally, white folks are expecting the 2nd Amendment to vanish, and are stocking up accordingly. I have not heard any chatter with regard to any possible racial riots, etc.

There is a strange dynamic going on. Currently the Gun Laws are relaxing in many States at a time when Americans are most Anxcious about our Government.

Here's my quick review of the GRB show in Houston today.

It was pretty crowded, but not as crowded as I expected. That said, some aisles were so full I had to revisit them later.

Tons of handguns as usual. Prices weren't noticeably higher, but my only way to judge was by looking at the Glocks.

A good amount of AR's, but not as many as usual and seemed to be much more expensive. The cheapest AR I saw was $1100, but I didn't look real close.

Magazines were in short supply and way more expensive. Glock mags $25-32 for instance.

Never have I seen so little ammo at a gunshow. The biggest ammo vendor reserved quite a few tables less than they usually do, and it was obvious why. They had way less than usual to sell. Way less. If there was a single round of .308 in the joint I didn't see it. Didn't even bother to look at prices.

Shocking price tags on junk guns. New CAI Cetme $950 (but saw a quality PTR91 for about the same price), a couple SKS's for $400. :confused_ma:

As luft mentioned, tons of buying going on. I'm not pleased to hear another GIM'r was there and we didn't meet and shoot the breeze.

Ever heard of "divide and conquer?"

That is the agenda, and Obama is merely a "minion" of the banksters. And if you think anyone other than the banksters are in charge, what other industry could "fail" and then bail themselves out with unlimited taxpayer funds?

Rather than point the finger at Obama, take the fight to the actual enemy.

And thanks to the OP for the thread. Anecdotal evidence is much appreciated.

Re: OMG...Gun Shop Mayhem

This might sound obvious but I will say it anyway, when the 1st black President fails to deliver on the "change" then all hell will break loose and just about every disinfranchised black will feel rightously empowered to take back what is theirs after years of being trated as a 2nd class citizen.

I remember living in London for a period back in 1990 when the annual Notting Hill blacks celebration takes place. I thought it would be good to go and see the parade, taste the food etc. Well anyway when the parade finished the blacks turned nasty for NO REASON and started targeting the whites including myself and began bumping into and becoming real agressive.

Why did they behave like that?

My thoughts are that they know they are 2nd class and don't like it and that they just feel that they can make themselves feel better by hurting the masters.

Sound familiar?

I have not seen anything here in Australia to suggest a run on the gun shops but last week there was a local story splashed all over the news about some muslims buying up stacks of ammo and guns in preparation to attack Australian citizens.

I was expecting it to be a lot more crowded as well. It was the ammount of people actually buying that surprised me. Most of the regular dealers that sell new firearms had a very poor selection of rifles. The guy I bought from I had never seen before but I went there looking for a specific gun the Kel-Tec PLR-16, anyway only one dealer at the show had them and he was it.

I have never seen anything like it. Fill out a transfer paper (if you could get one) give him your license and then wait. I waited 2 hours. If there was anywhere else I could have picked up a PLR-16 easily, at the gun show or not I would have left but no on-line dealers have them either. This guy would call in like 5 people at a time then he would ask what gun you wanted and have you pay. Then he would do 5 more background checks and have them pay. There were 30 or more waiting to buy.. Anyway he had 2 Saiga 12s left sitting there when my turn came up so I figured what the heck gimmie the PLR-16 and that Saiga 12 there.

That's what's nice about having a CCW license. No background check/instant check needed. Just fill out the paperwork, show them your drivers license and your CCW card and that's it.
I picked up my new shotgun a couple days ago, I wasn't in the store for more than 10 minutes.

Re: OMG...Gun Shop Mayhem

Took my wife to the gun shop today to pick up a shotgun and some ammo. Guy behind the counter said everything was gone and was sold as soon as it came in. We had a nice chat - turns out his wife is having a baby at my hospital next week to be delivered by a colleague. Then he says wait a minute and pulls a Mosberg off the rack. I say "I'll take it" and I let my wife try it out. We talk some more - turns out his Aunt is a nurse who worked in NYC with my wife. I asked him hsi thoughts on Obama and recent gun sales. He said everyone and their uncle is stocking up on all manner of firearms and ammo, both veterans and newbies. He said he thinks trouble is coming and folks best be prepared.

I'm a doctor not a hunter and know nothing from guns - just wanted a shotgun in the house in case. We have ten acres and all my neighbors are hunters and have literal arsenals. They've all offered to help my wife and I practice. So, now I'll spot out a good location for target practice. Next week, my wife and I will start attending shooting classes with intent to purchase a handgun for each of us.

I don't know what's coming vis-a-vis Helter Skelter but I want to have some way to defend my family and if necessary. I'll say this: I live in a rural area surrounded by hunters, shooters and general survivalist types, and person or persons looking for trouble would be a fool to screw around in this neck of the woods.

Im not so sure that was the reason. She says she won't own any guns. I guess that doesn't include borrowing one of mine if SHTF...

I went to the (indoor) gun range the other week. Ahead of me was this young black couple, and the lady behind the counter was describing a revolver they were going to rent - they obviously knew absolutely nothing about guns.

After about a minute, I was stunned to hear the following question: "What is recoil?":confused_ma:

I am sorry to say

gun sales will level off very quickly if not die in a few months.

between the prices going sky high.

the only thing beating gun sales is Americans running out of money and losing jobs-- are hitting records.

just remember pawn shops have a record going on people pawning their guns for cash.

After reading this thread all I can say is......... we are still the MINORITY.

That means the MAJORITY still think Obama is gonna sprinkle some majic pixie dust on the ecomony and make it all better ( I spoke with 3 extremely educated people just this weekend and all of them TRULY beileve this

Bottom line:The majority are going to take from the minority and the minority is getting well arrmed to defend what is rightfully theirs

This is not going to end good

I've never seen a black man working in or shopping in a gun store in my life.
Never thought about it until you posed this question, but it's true when I sat here and thought about it. I probably go to the gun shop about once a quarter on average. I have seen black police officers at the range, but not a citizen.

Went to the gun show today and it was pretty much a zoo, though not as packed as I expected from the reports I'd heard. Found a parking spot with no problem, though I did notice there was an extremely long waiting line for the permit class. Much longer than I've ever seen before.

Good news for me. I snagged a really nice chinese sks, stripper clips and 1000 rounds to feed her. Managed to get one of the last boxes of 7.62 x 39 left so happy dance for me today.
